Yesterday was one of the most surreal days that I have had in a long time. Maybe even ever as I watched a group of people, like, take over the Capitol on President Trump’s direction. Like, he literally asked them to do it. And people died. Like, I was watching that and I was like, people died yesterday trying to overthrow an election on the false belief that the election was unfair or even stolen.
It was crazy. But you know, there’s one thing I want you guys to take away from watching what happened yesterday here in the United States. And that is the power of language and the power of one person, because what we saw even earlier in the day, the Georgia Senate races turned blue and the two democratic opponents or two democratic candidates won. And I’m not here to celebrate that,
even though I do think it’s a good thing, but what I want to say about that is how that happened and demonstrate the power of one person. How that happened was two years ago, Stacey Abrams, a woman named Stacey Abrams was running for governor and the incumbent governor, when it looked like Stacey Abrams had a really strong chance of beating him, he really like, implemented some pretty significant voter suppression practices.
And Stacey Abrams ended up losing that election. And she was so hurt by what happened in the way that they conducted that election, that she didn’t incite violence. She didn’t ask people to protest. What she did was she created an organization. And then the subsequent two years, quietly registered a million new voters in the state of Georgia and really became a proponent of the importance of voting. And then two years later, Georgia becomes a democratic state. ,
Based upon that one woman’s effort, one person can make a difference. Always remember that, always believe that. And the way she made a difference wasn’t in the way President Trump is responding to the election that he lost by insighting riots and violence. I wouldn’t even call them protest, which is riots and violence and coup attempts. She just went to work and made her state different.
And then I want to talk about the power of language. Like as I was watching the reports come in about the Georgia Senate runoff races, I was watching a rally, I guess, in Washington DC, that President Trump attended. And I saw some things he said, and some things his son said and some things his attorney said, and I just thought, Oh my gosh, this is not going to go well because words are really, really powerful. When you use words like that, you get what happened yesterday evening.
So I hope we don’t have a surreal day to day. I hope we have a better day to day, but you know, I always talk about the power of language and how one person and even one question can make a difference in someone’s life. And I think yesterday we saw two examples of that and I hope we can remember that and then use our language and use our capacity to make a difference in a positive way.
