So this week was a really exciting, amazing week. I had the opportunity and pleasure to teach with three of my very best friends. Chris Iveson, Evan George, and Adam Froerer. And we were teaching at an event in London, which I think is like the best Solution Focused training that happens every year called the Brief Summer School. And it’s amazing.
But what happened that I really want to share with you guys is an idea was floated and kind of, we went deep into this idea and it creates new thinking. One of my favorite things about getting to teach with people that are so remarkably amazing and getting to spend my time with such an amazingly remarkable, intelligent audiences, is thatthese new ideas get sparked.
And this thing just started happening and started building. It was so inspirational that I want to share it with you. And I hope that it will impact the way that you work with clients. And I hope it will impact your lives as well. And it is, when you think about it, problems are very, very weak. Problems are not built on a strong structure. Problems are not architecturally sound because when you just push on them and you do one little thing to the variable of the problem, it often goes away.
The cool thing, like I’ve been doing psychotherapy now for 15 years, and it’s so interesting how often someone will come into my office with a really big problem, like major depression disorder, anxiety disorders, drinking habits, drugs, whatever it is. And then they change one detail in their life, seemingly one small thing, and then the problem goes away. So if you think about that, mathematically, if you change one variable in an equation, the equation is never the same. So very often someone will do one thing different and then like their life shifts and the problem has gone.
A really good fiend of mine named Bill O’Hanlon wrote a book one time called ‘Do one thing different’, and the premise of that book is if you just change one detail of your life, then the entire organizational structure of life changes. Oftentimes leaving the problem out. You know, your strength and your brilliance and your amazingness is actually built on a really strong foundation based upon your life experience and your history of success.
Your amazingness, your skill set is actually built on like thick tree roots and problems are like tumbleweeds. So just make sure that when you are thinking about living your life or working with your clients that you really focused on, I don’t necessarily have to create this big old solution. Like somebody one time told me that, however long it took to create a problem, that’s how long it takes to remove it. I can tell you right now, that is not true. All you have to do is apply your brilliance, do one thing differently, and then watch how your life reorganizes and unfold. That’s the key to success. That’s the key to life. That’s the key to removing problem behaviors. And that’s what I want you to take away from this video.
