What if I told you the key to accessing your destiny laid right there in your talents? Today I want to talk about how we can identify our talents and then use them to elevate our lives to places we never thought we’d reach.

Do you have any hidden talents? And I mean talents that have been hidden from you by the life that you led?

For me, I grew up with a dad who was more critical and insulting than he was praising. And one of the consequences of a childhood like that, is I never really knew what my gifts were. I never really knew what my talents were. I grew up way more aware of my flaws and of my bad traits. And that led to depression, anxiety, and insecurities.

Even in adulthood, when I entered into the field of psychotherapy with that mindset of being so much more aware of my problems, I realized now that I had a talent to speak, I had a talent to write, I had a talent to provide therapy. But there were so many people in our field who viewed me as a threat, and literally tried to end my career by attacking me publicly, and starting rumors about me that were not true.

This adulthood has been a journey of discovery for me. And as I’ve realized some of my gifts and some of my talents, I can incorporate those things more into my life. And it has completely changed my life. And now I’ve become one of the biggest speakers in my field. I’ve become someone who leads the largest training organization in my field. And I’ve become someone who’s published some of the most popular books in my field.

I don’t say that to brag. I say that because when you become aware of what your unique gifts and talents are, you can build your life around those things. And maybe your life has been like mine, when you weren’t always aware of the things that made you great. So thus you did not build your life around those skills and talents.

Not only do I think the center of Solution Focused Brief Therapy is helping people to recognize what their greatnesses are so they can play a bigger role in their life, I think that’s kind of like the key to life. I think that’s kind of like the key to everything around us, is figuring out what you’re great at and building a life around.

These days, I just get to do so many incredible things. In the last 48 hours, I was doing some cool stuff in L.A. I was able to speak at one of the largest psychotherapy events in the field. And then the very next day, came to Newark, New Jersey, and spoke at a mental health event that was hosted by a man named Charlemagne, the God.

And now I sit back thinking about what an amazing journey this is, but how none of it would have been possible had I not realized what my skills, talents and abilities are. And I want you to do the same.

I want you to figure out what you’re great at, what your unique skills, talents and abilities are, so that you, too, can build your life around those things.
